My general interests are in evolutionary biology and biology of amphibians. My special interests are in areas related to speciation that is degree of genetic and phenotypic divergence between closely related species, patterns of their geopgraphic variation and their causes, hybridisation and genetic analysis of hybrid zones. My research is focused on two hybridising species of the European fire-bellied toads, Bombina bombina and Bombina variegata, to understand dynamics of hybrid zones which separate their ranges. Genetic analysis of the zones, based on allozyme markers, mtDNA, morphological characters and mating calls, allows quantification of forces responsible for the zone maintenance and gives insight into interactions of divergent genomes in a particular genetic and ecological setting. Complementary to genetic analysis are my interests in ecological correlates of morphological, physiological and behavioural differences between the two species.
